VoIP is short for Voice over Internet Protocol telephony. It is a system by which internet users can call someone through the computer. The parties talking through VoIP talk with the use of headsets and can view each other live through webcams. Individual subscription was made available initially when VoIP was a new system to make calls even to telephone landlines.
Termination
The word termination refers to the party who is on the receiving end of a VoIP call from someone else from a public switched telephone system (PSTN). The calling party from a PSTN is the opposite and referred to as the origination point. The words termination and origination are used only with reference to PSTN and VoIP calls interchange.
To state it more clearly termination is a call coming from VoIP to a PSTN. Origination on the other hand, is a call coming from a PSTN and received by VoIP.
Wholesale VoIP
As it is understood, wholesale is selling in large volume or quantity. With VoIP it is the same where a volume of traffic is available from a wholesale voip termination service provider. The wholesaler then initiates contracts with retailers. When the VoIP service provider sends traffic to a wholesaler, the wholesaler re-routes it via a partner carrier for retailer termination.
In the business sense of it, a VoIP service provider is relieved from the work and duties of doing retail business. The wholesaler takes on the duties and responsibilities in providing the service to retailers that eventually does business with individual subscribers of VoIP.
The larger volume a wholesaler purchases from a VoIP service provider, the better chance to get or bargain for lower prices. This explains why different wholesalers have different pricing. Institutions that are in telemarketing now, many of them have subscribed to VoIP because of the lower rates compared to the standard landline telephone rates that vary with distance or location.
